. . . part of a series inspired by the music of Modest Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. This handmade linoleum block print represents V. Ballet des poussins dans leurs Coques (Ballet of the Chicks in their Shells). Victor Hartmann, Moussorgsky's inspiration, drew costume and set designs for the ballet, Trilby. Children from the Russian Imperial Ballet School not only dressed as chicks in their eggs, but also as birds and butterflies.
