It’s not too soon to start thinking Out of the Box - Out of the Box Exhibition and Auction, that is! This fun, biennial event is part of the Akron Area Arts Alliance’s Arts Alive! Awards Celebration.
The concept is simple: artists donate their time and talent to create a box that is sold during the Arts Alive! silent auction to benefit the Akron Area Arts Alliance and Summit Artspace. I’ve been a box donor for every Arts Alive! since the inaugural gala in 2001 and have loved the challenge of creating something outside of my usual two-dimensional work.
Although the big event is in November, the fun begins this weekend! The Out of the Box Workshop is Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Artists are invited to bring basic materials, good ideas and lots of imagination!
Boxes can be traditional or outlandish, literal or conceptual, sculptural or two-dimensional. I like to try something new:
