women’s work postcard art

The first exhibit of the new year is officially underway at Summit Artspace. Women’s Work opened Friday with a public reception for artists Barbara Gillette, Linda Hutchinson, Linda Tompkin and Laura Wagner.

Summit Artspace shows that feature a small number of artists are often installed with the artwork grouped separately.  As the current paintings arrived it became clear that these works were destined to mingle in a vibrant display of portraits, still lifes, landscapes and fanciful mixed media pieces. Thankfully, upon delivering their paintings, the artists and helpers were willing to wait patiently while the work was arranged and rearranged and re-rearranged. (Decisiveness does not come easily to me.)  Now visitors to this show will find passages that flow with echoing colors and some lighthearted visual combinations. The juxtapostion of the work invites viewers to take a closer look at the individual pieces and affords them a few surprises along the way. Each woman brings a strong, personal vision to her art; together they have given us an inspiring exhibit.

Postcard art was again designed by the talented Liz Remmel of Immix Studio; the opening night line-up pictured below includes Linda Tompkin, Barbara Gillette, Linda Hutchinson and Laura Wagner - my inclusion is questionable. Thanks to Rick Hutchinson for wielding the camera.

raven

Happy grave birthday greetings, Mr. Poe! Two hundred years and still creepy as ever. One can imagine that you would appreciate Christopher Walken’s take on The Raven, but since it’s a day to celebrate .  .  .

[LINES ON ALE]
Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerest fancies
   Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
   I am drinking ale today.

past + present

A recent set of holiday commissions afforded me the opportunity to revisit a couple of portrait subjects from Christmas(es) past. While all are mixed media, watercolor and pastel, the earlier pieces were created with playful colors while a more refined palette was used for the present-day portrayals. In addition, the new portraits are in a smaller format, matted to fit nicely in a 5 x 7 frame for placement on a desk or shelf.

art in transit

Tomorrow’s public opening of the new Metro RTA Intermodal Transit Center in Akron will also be the official beginning of a partnership between Metro and Artists of Rubber City. As described in last week’s tab in the Beacon Journal, commuters will “find artwork that transforms the Transit Center into a veritable art gallery.” Pieces are now on display in glass cases, but the future will see work “hung from the ceiling, elevated on internal divider walls, and positioned at floor level.” Plans are also underway for Art on the Go, a Metro bus/mobile gallery and acquisition of a commissioned outdoor sculpture to serve as a signature piece.

Featured in the newspaper article are pieces by Nancy Richards-Davis (encaustics) and Don Parsisson (sculpture) on the left with work by Miller Horns (electrostatics) and Sharon Wagner (ceramics) on the right; a piece from my Imprints series is in the center.
For the opening the glass cases contain the work of Joe Dick (photography), Katie Pursley (pastels), Dianne Winnen-Oldenburg (fiber), Marcia Mazak (mixed media) and Ardyse Mund (watercolor) along with a couple of my block prints.
